First from a triptych reinterpreting latvian mythology. The painting is an interpretation of the illustration made by the latvian artist Aleksandrs Junkers in 1939. The artist depicts the Latvian mythological figure Māra as a symbol of fertility and beauty. In the illustration the moonlit goddess, dressed in traditional Latvian clothing, is floating above a village and giving it her blessing. The painting, however, puts the goddess in a modern and more intimate state and draws attention to her role as the goddess of sea, water and wind. Some of the animals as well as the mystical moonlit underwater environment correspond with the A. Junkers illustration.
